NovaSure Offers an Option for Those with Heavy Periods

Menstrual bleeding affects every aspect of a woman’s life, from the clothing she chooses to wear during this time, to her sports performance when she is menstruating. Two surveys were conducted of women athletes, and both found that women believe heavy menstrual bleeding impacted their performance or their training. Of those participating, 36 percent reported they suffer from heavy bleeding during periods, but more than 50 percent of respondents in one survey felt their performance was impacted, regardless of the amount of bleeding. In the second survey, 33 percent reported the same. For these reasons and many others, numerous women are looking to treat this issue.

Heavy menstrual bleeding affects millions of women every year, and the consequences can be far-reaching. Headaches, fatigue, nausea, and bad cramps have all been associated with this condition, and 33 percent of women affected state they have missed work due to a heavy period. Furthermore, 80 percent report they have avoided sex, and more than 60 percent have opted out of an athletic or social event. Depression, moodiness, anxiety, and a lack of confidence have also been linked to this disorder.

NovaSure endometrial ablation is an option women should consider if they suffer from heavy menstrual bleeding. It involves removing the lining of the uterus, as this is where menstrual bleeding originates. With the help of this procedure, many females experience a boost in their self-confidence. Numerous state they have more energy, their moods improve, and it may also be of help in reducing common symptoms of PMS, including irritability. Periods often become less painful, as well. A woman can wear any clothing with confidence, not worrying about bleed-through and more. Before a woman decides to treat heavy periods with this method, however, she needs to understand the risks involved, as this allows her to make an informed decision as to whether it’s the best option.

NovaSure should not be used for women who wish to bear more children, as pregnancy following the procedure may be problematic. This isn’t a sterilization procedure, however, women need to use another form of birth control after the procedure. NovaSure is best for women who are premenopausal and suffer from heavy bleeding. In addition, it shouldn’t be used for those who may have uterine cancer, IUDs, or any form of genital or pelvic infection.

Recovery time is minimal with this procedure. Some women state they experienced cramping, nausea, vomiting and mild pain following the procedure; yet, most find they can resume normal activities in approximately 2-3 days. Women often experience a bloody or watery discharge following the ablation, and this is completely normal. This may last for a few days or could continue for months. In addition, it may start immediately after the procedure or a few weeks later. Again, this is to be expected.

Contact Woodlands OBGYN Associates to learn more about this procedure, and how it may be of benefit to you. Women who suffer from heavy bleeding on a regular basis, and athletes who find their performance or training is impacted by their periods, should discuss this option. Although it’s not the right choice for everyone, it’s something any woman plagued with this problem should consider if they don’t wish to have more children.
