- Posted on: Jun 20 2014
In the past, women who experienced uterine fibroids often treated them with surgery, most typically a hysterectomy. But as medical technology progresses, this is becoming a less viable option, especially for women who want to maintain their fertility. Which is why were excited to learn about this amazing new treatment for uterine fibroids.
It is called Acessa, and it is a minimally invasive procedure to treat uterine fibroids that does not remove the uterus or even the fibroids. The laparoscopic procedure delivers radiofrequency energy to destroy the uterine fibroids without the need to cut them out.
After this treatment, the fibroids are then safely re-absorbed by the surrounding tissue. The procedure is a great advancement in treatment because it allows doctors to treat only the fibroids, all while not interfering with the normal function of the uterus. Patients who undergo Acessa usually go home the same day of the procedure and experience little pain with a quick return to normal activities.
So what is the origin of this procedure? It was started in New Jersey and since September 2013, over 300 women have been successfully treated with Acessa with many others sure to follow. It was first performed by Dr. Mark Martens, chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
With great benefits for both doctor and patient alike, we hope to see this form non-surgical uterine fibroid treatment grow in popularity and demand.
