How are ultrasounds used in obstetrics and gynecology?

An obstetrics/gynecology ultrasound is a dialogistic tool used at Woodlands OBGYN Associates to spot problems within the body to investigate certain concerns. The ultrasound energy creates images using the high-frequency sound waves to check various areas, including a woman’s fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, uterus, and bladder.

Ultrasound energy is used in two different ways at Woodlands OBGYN Associates. First, it is commonly used to both confirm and monitor pregnancy. The images used can even help our team determine the gender of a child after approximately 20 weeks gestation. Second, ultrasounds can be used in gynecological care to evaluate and diagnose conditions such as uterine fibroids, abnormal uterine bleeding, and ovarian cysts. This allows our team to find the source of a problem and recommend the best possible treatment to address the issue.

What are the benefits of ultrasounds in obstetrics and gynecology?

One of the reasons why our team utilizes ultrasound energy is because it provides us with clear images to monitor fetal development during pregnancy and diagnose conditions in the woman’s reproductive system. This ensures we can make proper treatment recommendations for our patients. Ultrasounds are also low in cost, result in no pain or discomfort, and can be performed by our entire team. The images created from ultrasound energy can be used in diagnosing problems that patients may have, including pelvic pain or uterine bleeding that may not have a physically visible cause.

Why are ultrasounds beneficial during pregnancy?

First and foremost, ultrasounds are often used in confirming that a pregnancy has occurred. This may be necessary if urine testing and other methods make it difficult to be sure that a woman is indeed pregnant. Ultrasounds are then used to monitor fetal development, determine possible due dates for a baby, and to learn the baby’s gender. Screening the position and size of the baby, while also looking for signs of birth defects, make the ultrasound device invaluable to our doctors.
