Vaginal Rejuvenation

What is vaginal rejuvenation?  Ask 20 people this question and you will get 20 different answers.  The term vaginal rejuvenation became popular as a marketing term used to describe an “elective” vaginal tightening procedure of the vagina.  Initially this was a surgical procedure, but the term has now also been adopted by the multiple laser manufactures that claim vaginal tightening with a laser treatment.  As a catch all phrase this now also includes vaginoplasty, labiaplasty (minora and majora), clitoral hood reduction and perineoplasty.  Let’s discuss each of these procedures.

Vaginoplasty

This is a surgical procedure that gynecologist have done for years to repair the damages of childbirth and aging to the inside of the vagina.  Typical complaints include the loss of urine, problems with bowel movements, pain with intercourse, or the loss of sensation with intercourse.  This loss of sensation can cause problems with orgasm.  A vaginoplasty is performed by a gynecologist and may be covered by insurance as a medical necessity. These procedures are performed in a hospital or surgery center.  See Pelvic Prolapse and Urinary incontinence.

Labiaplasty and clitoral hood reduction

The labia minora (the inner lips) and the labia majora (the outer lips) of the vagina vary greatly among women. In some women the size can cause chronic irritation, rubbing, discomfort during intercourse, or an undesired bulge under clothing. The labia also can grow with age and estrogen stimulation(puberty, pregnancy, hormones). Women request labiaplasty to reduce the size and discoloration of the labia as well as to improve confidence, comfort and sexual pleasure. If needed these procedures can be combined with a removal of the excessive skin covering the clitoris known as a clitoral hood reduction. Please note this is not a female circumcision. When needed clitoral hood reduction allows a more symmetrical look of the clitoris and the newly reduced labia.

Labia majora reduction is also done to improve comfort, confidence, and the appearance of the vagina. These procedures are commonly requested after child birth, aging and weight-loss.

These procedures can be combined with other surgeries such as hysterectomy or vaginoplasty. Labiaplasty can also be performed in the comfort and privacy of my office with local anesthesia or IV sedation. In office procedures are significantly less expensive than procedures performed at the hospital. Since labiaplasty is a cosmetic procedure, insurance does not cover this service.

Perineoplasty

The area between the vagina and rectum is called the perineum. This is the area that stretches, tears, or is cut during childbirth. This creates an unusually open entry to the vaginal canal that can lead to irritation from tight clothing, self-consciousness and diminished sexual enjoyment. Perineoplasty reduces the laxity of the vaginal opening, restores the normal separation of the the vagina and rectum, and restores the proper angle of the vagina. This can be done in conjunction with a vaginoplasty or separately. It can also be combined with a labiaplasty. This procedure can also be done in our office. Since perineoplasty is cosmetic procedure insurance does not cover this service.

Why Might Cosmetic Vaginal Procedures Be Needed?

Women who experience discomfort, chafing, or any pain may be eligible for a cosmetic vaginal treatment. These procedures can often reconstruct and restore the vaginal area to achieve a more aesthetic appearance. Patients who struggle with UTIs, pain during intimacy, or difficulty exercising may benefit from cosmetic vaginal procedures.

Who Is The Ideal Candidate for Cosmetic Vaginal Procedures?

Ideal candidates for cosmetic vaginal procedures should be at least eighteen years of age and in overall good health. Patients who are seeking cosmetic enhancement should share their aesthetic goals during their consultation and be able to maintain realistic expectations. This procedure can benefit women who would like to improve the appearance of their vagina and its surrounding area.

Are There Any Risks With Cosmetic Vaginal Procedures?

Like any surgery, a cosmetic vaginal procedure can come with risks, including allergic reactions, bleeding or infection. Patients may also experience some raised scarring as well as regular scars. However, many patients report that the rejuvenation of their vaginal area’s appearance far outweighs having a scar.

What Is Recovery Like After a Cosmetic Vaginal Procedure?

Although recovery time after your cosmetic vaginal procedure will vary depending on your progress, most patients complete a full recovery within six weeks. During your recovery, it’s essential to follow your surgeon’s aftercare recommendations diligently to avoid complications and the risk of infection.

What Are the Benefits of a Cosmetic Vaginal Procedure?

For patients seeking a cosmetic vaginal procedure, achieving their aesthetic goals can have a huge effect on their self-confidence, improve comfort during physical activity, and enhance their relationships. From finding relief from discomfort and pain to an increase in sexual satisfaction, a cosmetic vaginal procedure can be life-changing for many women.
