Vaginal Rejuvenation
What is vaginal rejuvenation? Ask 20 people this question, and you will get 20 different answers.
The term vaginal rejuvenation became popular as a marketing term used to describe an “elective” vaginal tightening procedure of the vagina.
Initially, this procedure was surgical, but the term is now used by multiple laser manufacturers that can achieve vaginal tightening with a less-invasive laser treatment. As a catch-all phrase, this now also includes vaginoplasty, labiaplasty (minora and majora), clitoral hood reduction, and perineoplasty.
Labiaplasty and Clitoral Hood Reduction
The labia minora (the inner lips) and the labia majora (the outer lips) of the vagina vary greatly among women. In some women, the size can cause chronic irritation, rubbing, discomfort during intercourse, or an undesired bulge under clothing. The labia also can grow with age and estrogen stimulation (puberty, pregnancy, hormones).
Women request labiaplasty to reduce the size and discoloration of the labia as well as to improve confidence, comfort, and sexual pleasure. If needed, these procedures can be combined with a removal of the excessive skin covering the clitoris, known as a clitoral hood reduction. Please note this is not a female circumcision. When needed, clitoral hood reduction allows a more symmetrical look of the clitoris and the newly reduced labia.
Labia majora reduction is also done to improve comfort and the appearance of the vagina. These procedures are commonly requested after childbirth, aging, and significant weight loss.
Labiaplasty is performed in the comfort and privacy of our office with local anesthesia or IV sedation. In-office procedures are much less expensive than procedures performed at the hospital. Since labiaplasty is a cosmetic procedure, insurance does not cover this service.
Perineoplasty
The area between the vagina and rectum is called the perineum. This is the area that stretches, tears, or is cut during childbirth. This creates an unusually open entry to the vaginal canal that can lead to irritation from tight clothing, self-consciousness, and diminished sexual enjoyment.
Perineoplasty reduces the laxity of the vaginal opening and restores the normal separation of the vagina and rectum and the proper angle of the vagina. It can also be combined with a labiaplasty. This procedure can also be done in our office. Since perineoplasty is a cosmetic procedure, insurance does not cover this service.
Who Is the Ideal Candidate for Cosmetic Vaginal Procedures?
Ideal candidates for cosmetic vaginal procedures should be at least eighteen years of age and in overall good health. Patients who are seeking cosmetic enhancement should share their aesthetic goals during their consultation and be able to maintain realistic expectations. This procedure can benefit women who would like to improve the appearance and comfort of their vagina and its surrounding area.

- More self-confidence
- Improved comfort
- Increased sexual satisfaction
- Reduced chronic pain
- Improved personal hygiene
- Better fitting clothing

Are There Any Risks With Cosmetic Vaginal Procedures?
Like any surgery, a cosmetic vaginal procedure can come with risks, including allergic reactions, bleeding or infection. Patients may also experience some raised scarring as well as regular scars. However, many patients report that the rejuvenation of their vaginal area’s appearance far outweighs having a scar.
What Is Recovery Like After a Cosmetic Vaginal Procedure?
Although recovery time after your cosmetic vaginal procedure will vary depending on your progress, most patients complete a full recovery within six weeks. During your recovery, it’s essential to follow your surgeon’s aftercare recommendations diligently to avoid complications and the risk of infection.
Are There Non-Surgical Options for Vaginal Rejuvenation/Tightening?
Yes, we offer advanced non-surgical options for vaginal rejuvenation and tightening at Woodlands OBGYN Associates.
- Votiva by InMode: Uses radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen production, which improves vaginal tone and elasticity. Requires no anesthesia or downtime and takes less than an hour.
- Laser Treatments: Use precise laser energy to heat vaginal tissues, promoting collagen production and improving tightness and elasticity.
Both options provide effective results without the need for surgery.
