An Advanced & Minimally Invasive Surgical Option
Woodlands OBGYN Associates is pleased to offer the advanced technology of the da Vinci® Robot Surgery system as a viable option for safe and minimally invasive gynecological surgeries. In gynecology, da Vinci® Robot surgery is utilized for conditions requiring hysterectomy, myomectomy (removal of uterine fibroids), and pelvic prolapse. If you need surgery, we encourage you to become educated on the benefits of robotic surgery.
Advanced Surgical Technology with Benefits
The da Vinci® Robot is an innovative tool that gives a surgeon improved visualization and control during complex surgeries. During some gynecologic procedures, surgeons can access the targeted anatomy using a vaginal approach, which may not require an external incision. But for complex hysterectomies and other gynecologic procedures, surgery with the da Vinci® Surgical System may be the most effective, and least invasive treatment option.
Through small incisions, surgeons using da Vinci® system can operate with greater precision and control using the magnified high definition 3D image. At the same time, state-of-the-art robotic and computer technologies scale, filter and seamlessly translate the surgeon’s hand movements into precise micro-movements of the da Vinci® instruments. This will minimize the pain and risk associated with large incisions, while also increasing the likelihood of a much faster recovery and excellent clinical outcome.

In our Woodlands OBGYN practice, da Vinci® Robot surgery is done to perform the following procedures:
- Hysterectomy
- Myomectomy (Removal of Uterine Fibroids)
- Complex Removal of Endometriosis
- Ovarian Tumors
- Sacrocolpopexy (Vaginal Suspension for Prolapse)

Addressing Your Surgical Concerns
Frequently Asked Questions about da Vinci® Surgery:
Some of the major benefits experienced by surgeons using this surgical technique over traditional approaches have been greater surgical precision, increased range of motion, improved dexterity, enhanced visualization and improved access. Benefits experienced by patients may include a shorter hospital stay, less pain, less risk of infection, less blood loss, fewer transfusions, less scarring, faster recovery and a quicker return to normal daily activities. None of these benefits can be guaranteed, as surgery is necessarily both patient- and procedure-specific.
Currently, da Vinci® robot surgery is being used in hundreds of locations worldwide, in major medical centers and premier hospitals in the United States, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, India, Japan, the Netherlands, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Australia and Turkey.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the da Vinci Surgical System for a wide range of procedures.
Although seated at a console a few feet away from the patient, the surgeon views an actual image of the surgical field while operating in real-time, through tiny incisions, using miniaturized, wristed instruments. At no time does the surgeon see a virtual image or program/command the system to perform any maneuver on its own/outside of the surgeon’s direct, real-time control.
The system is a robotic surgical platform designed to enable complex procedures of all types to be performed through 1-2 cm incisions or operating “ports.” To date, tens of thousands of procedures including general, urologic, gynecologic, and cardiovascular procedures have been performed using the da Vinci Surgical System.
The da Vinci robotic surgery platform has a strong history of success in treating gynecological conditions. This system has been designed to enhance flexibility and precision during laparoscopic procedures by allowing the surgeon maximum visibility of the surgical site. Using the da Vinci platform, surgeons can perform complex and delicate procedures that have previously required long-incision open surgery techniques.
- Who is the ideal candidate for a surgical procedure using the da Vinci® Robot?
It can be stressful to think about needing a gynecological procedure. One of the benefits of the da Vinci Robotic surgery system is that it can increase peace of mind related to surgery. Some of the aspects of this technology that may make it an ideal option include:
- Little time for lengthy recovery. Most people are extraordinarily busy these days. Even if you have the time to spare, you probably don’t want to devote it to managing post-operative discomfort. Having surgery with the da Vinci robot can alleviate concerns related to extended downtime, making it a good choice for the busy woman.
- Minor incisions result in less scarring. Some gynecological procedures require incisions in the abdominal area, where scars may be visible. Many patients like the idea of incisions being very short, enabling optimal tissue recovery.
While patients who undergo robotic surgery tend to experience a reduced risk of infection, less scarring, greater comfort, and faster recovery, no surgery is completely without risk. It is imperative to undergo da Vinci robotic surgery with an experienced surgeon. The risks that are associated with this surgical method are similar to most surgeries. They include adverse reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, fluid accumulation, and poor wound healing.
The da Vinci system is designed to streamline and enhance various surgical procedures. It does so with the following:
- Laparoscopic technology that guides the surgeon through the procedure via images displayed on a video monitor in the operating room.
- Magnification of the surgical field that provides a high-definition, 3-dimensional view of relevant internal structures.
- Wristed instruments on the surgical platform that rotate and bend to greater degrees than the human hand.
Gynecological surgeries performed using the robotic device can range from about 1 to 2 hours for simple cases, to 4-5 hours for very complex cases. After surgery, patients may be in a monitored recovery area for some time while their anesthesia wears off.
Most insurance providers cover at least some of the costs associated with robotic surgery. However, coverage amounts can vary among insurance plans. Patients should contact their insurance company directly for an estimate regarding their procedure.
