3D Mammograms at Woodlands OBGYN Associates

Although tomosynthesis technology is relatively new, it is definitely creating quite the buzz in breast health care. Tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, is the next step in breast cancer detection. Unlike conventional 2D mammography, tomosynthesis takes multiple pictures of the breast from several different angles. Radiologists are then able to view the images of the breast in high resolution slices that are about 1 mm each.

Recent studies throughout the country have revealed that by viewing the images individually detection issues such as overlapping have lessened and the number of patient recalls has decreased. Aside from yielding false positives, traditional digital machines can also be uncomfortable for the patient, therefore deterring then from having the test done.

In 2011 the FDA approved the 3D mammography equipment manufactured by Hologic to be used in the United States. The cost of the equipment is more than twice that of the standard imaging machine, but more and more clinics throughout the country are purchasing them. In most cases insurers are not covering the exam. Houston Methodist the Woodlands offers this 3D technology which may provide better detection and a decrease in call backs for additional views. The physicians and Woodlands ObGyn Associates recommend this enhancement to the mammogram.
