Is Laser Skin Resurfacing Good for Acne?

Laser skin resurfacing is a technique used for diminishing the look of imperfections on the surface of the skin. A laser is used during the procedure to liquefy the molecular bonds of the skin cells that have been damaged. This is done layer by layer until a more uniformed and smoother appearance is accomplished. Due to its anti-aging properties, the resurfacing procedure is sometimes referred to as skin rejuvenation. It also peels away layers of damaged skin; thus, it has also been called laser peeling.

Though laser resurfacing has been effective at treating acne, there is a limit to the type of acne and other skin conditions that the procedure can treat. This treatment is ideal for individuals who have type 1 or 2 (fair) skin, or for those with box car scars. However, individuals of a dark complexion will not get favorable results from this procedure.

Erbium and carbon dioxide are the two kinds of lasers that are most commonly utilized during laser skin resurfacing treatments. Both of these lasers vaporize cells that are damaged at the surface level of the skin.

In a single session, the treatment can safely and efficiently remove shallow scars almost completely. However, a mixture of scars may require other treatments. For example, punch excision, or TCA CROSS, will provide better treatment for ice pick scars.

The treatment is also ideal for individuals who have uneven pigmentation, wrinkles, lines, and superficial scars that will not respond to gentler treatment methods. Ideal candidates for this type of procedure have non-oily, elastic skin that will not scar after minor injuries.

Laser resurfacing also works well for individuals who do not have existing medical conditions that require prescription medication. This could result in undue risk during treatment, or during the period of recovery. Overall, laser treatment can work well for acne, but not every type of acne.
