The Impact of Sexual Dysfunction

Many women experience problems with sexual function at some point in their life. A survey conducted by the Journal of American Medical Association in 1999 indicated that sexual dysfunction affects approximately 43% of women in the U.S. Female sexual dysfunction can occur at all stages of life, and it may be ongoing, or happen only once in a while. In any case, and with whatever amount of frequency, the impact it can have on one’s life is a crucial factor to give adequate attention to and to address.

Types of Dysfunction & Factors

Sexual response involves a complex interaction of physiology, emotions, experiences, beliefs, lifestyle and relationships. Disruption of any of these components can affect sexual drive, arousal or satisfaction. Types of sexual dysfunction include:

  • Low sexual desire – You have diminished libido, or low sex drive.
  • Sexual arousal disorder – Your desire for sex might be intact, but you have difficulty, or are unable to become aroused, and/or maintain arousal during sexual activity.
  • Orgasmic disorder – You have persistent or recurrent difficulty in achieving orgasm after sufficient sexual arousal and ongoing stimulation.
  • Sexual pain disorder – You have pain associated with sexual stimulation or vaginal contact.

Many factors can contribute to sexual dysfunction:

  • Hormone dysfunction (low estrogen or testosterone)
  • Vaginal Pain (scarring, lack of hormones, problems with pelvic prolapse)
  • Urinary incontinence (can cause embarrassment, avoidance)
  • Anxiety, depression, stress, distractions, relationship problems
  • Substance abuse (alcohol, tobacco, marijuana)
  • Illness (diabetes, hypertension, cancer)
  • Negative body perception
  • Medications (birth control pills, anti-depressants, blood pressure medication)
  • Excessive exercise
