What is prenatal care?

Prenatal care is best described as any treatment or advice based on professional recommendations from a doctor during one’s pregnancy. These visits occur throughout the three trimesters with different focuses throughout. Women can reduce the risk of a variety of prenatal issues by maintaining these regular appointments with their obstetrician.

How often are prenatal visits?

Most women will experience changes in how often their appointments are based on the progression of their pregnancy. In the earlier stages, visits once a month are appropriate. Approximately halfway through the pregnancy, women may have ultrasounds and other diagnostic tests to monitor the growth of the baby and make sure no problems are spotted. As women enter into the third trimester, visits will also increase until delivery. Patients who are diagnosed with any condition that makes them a high risk pregnancy may have more frequent prenatal visits and diagnostic imaging done to monitor both the baby and mom throughout the process.

Why are prenatal visits important?

These visits are vital to ensuring a healthy pregnancy. They allow a professional to monitor the health of the developing baby while providing other services for the mother including genetic screenings and diagnostic ultrasounds.
