If you suffer from vaginal dryness and discomfort, this can make sexual intimacy very painful. The good news is that there are many ways you can treat this so that you can enjoy intimacy with your partner again.
There are many reasons why women suffer from vaginal dryness. Menopause and pre-menopause can cause a loss of natural vaginal lubrication, which can lead to pain during sex. When the skin around the vagina begins to thin, this can make it more prone to friction and damage as well.
Most women, when they first experience consistent dryness during intercourse, will try water-based lubricants to help moisten the vaginal area and prevent pain. However, in order to treat chronic vaginal dryness, many doctors will recommend the following:
MonaLisa Touch® Laser. This revolutionary laser is specifically for women who suffer from vaginal dryness. MonaLisa Touch® implements CO2 laser energy that is delivered via side-firing probe inserted into the vaginal canal. A two-part pulse targets surface (epithelial) tissue and deep (lamina propria) tissue to promote vaginal revitalization. After a few short visits, you can be returned to vaginal health. Find out more about this revolutionary treatment here.
Vaginal Estrogen Cream. This cream is inserted directly into the vagina using a sterile applicator. It is most often done at bedtime so that the medication can take effect while you are lying down. If your doctor prescribes this cream, he or she will instruct you on how much to use, and how frequently you should insert it.
Vaginal Estrogen Ring. This is a soft, flexible ring that is inserted inside the upper part of your vagina by your doctor (or you can insert it yourself, if you feel comfortable doing this). The ring releases continual doses of estrogen as long as you have it in place, and it should be changed at least every three months.
Vaginal Estrogen Tablets. These are also tablets that are placed directly inside the vagina using a disposable applicator. As with the estrogen cream, your doctor will let you how often the tablets should be inserted.
These three treatments have proven to be quite effective for relieving vagina dryness for most women who are experiencing pre or post-menopause. So if this is something you suffer from, speak to your doctor or gynecologist to see if one of these treatment options would be best for you. In addition, avoid using perfumed soaps or detergents, as these can also lead to further dryness and irritation.
