What is a uterine fibroid?
A uterine fibroid is an abnormal growth that is comprised of muscle tissue that develop in the uterus or on the walls of the uterus. They can cause problems such as irregular bleeding and pelvic pain. Uterine fibroids that become large and problematic often require effective treatment.
Why does a uterine fibroid develop?
When muscle cells in the uterus multiply too quickly, they can cause the development of lumps that may be any shape or size. There may be one or several that grow on the inner and outer surfaces of the uterus or on the uterine wall. It is believed that uterine fibroids may grow due to estrogen and progesterone levels, which explains why most tend to shrink after menopause when these hormones naturally decrease. Some women may develop them if they have a family member that has them. Regardless, if they become a problem, it is best that a woman seeks assistance with her gynecologist to determine if they need to be treated.
What can happen with untreated uterine fibroids?
Most uterine fibroids are asymptomatic and are not a problem for most women, especially when they are small. However, some untreated uterine fibroids may cause serious complications such as anemia or chronic pelvic pain. They can interfere with one’s quality of life and may also impact pregnancy. Women with uterine fibroids may have more difficulty conceiving a child, and they may have an increased risk of miscarriage. Intense symptoms that are not resolved in any other manner may mean uterine fibroids need to be treated or removed.
