What Is the Anatomy Ultrasound?
The anatomy ultrasound is typically performed around week 19 or 20 of pregnancy. This imaging scan uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed pictures of the baby inside the uterus. Unlike earlier ultrasounds, which confirm pregnancy and measure growth, this mid-pregnancy scan offers an in-depth look at fetal anatomy.
The ultrasound typically takes 30 to 45 minutes and is a non-invasive procedure. A trained sonographer performs the exam, and a physician reviews the images to ensure everything is progressing normally.
What Does the Anatomy Scan Evaluate?
The scan examines all major structures of the baby’s body, including:
- Brain and spinal cord
- Heart and major vessels
- Face, lips, and palate
- Abdomen, kidneys, and bladder
- Arms, legs, hands, and feet
In addition to assessing the baby’s organs and limbs, the ultrasound also evaluates the position of the placenta, the level of amniotic fluid, and the length of the cervix. These measurements help determine fetal growth and identify any potential complications early on.
If the baby is positioned well, this may also be the time parents learn the baby’s sex. However, that is optional and not the primary purpose of the scan.
Why the Anatomy Ultrasound Matters
This ultrasound is a crucial part of prenatal care because it helps detect potential concerns such as structural abnormalities, growth restrictions, or placental issues. In most cases, the results are reassuring. If anything unusual is identified, our team at Woodlands OBGYN Associates is equipped to recommend follow-up imaging or refer to a maternal-fetal medicine specialist if needed.
